No, it's open to the public.

Depends on what you call excitement:
Thursday is practice day, there are matches run all day, but some teams
are still working out the bugs, so there's more dead robots and less
action to the matches. Frantic action in the pits and machine shop.
Friday all day, and Saturday Morning are the qualification matches,
where teams are randomly assigned into 'alliances' for each match. Lots
of action, lots of excited people everywhere.
Saturday afternoon is the championship elimination, where the teams that
scored the best during qualification are allowed to hand-pick their
alliance partners, then go into a single-elimination tournament. The best
robots, the best drivers, and the maximum decibel screaming kids!
