A couple of local teams went to St. Louis.
Huron High (Team 830)
My old team came in 29th. They started out with only a drivetrain
running, but had their ring handler working by late afternoon Friday.
They were chosen by the 7th Alliance captain (Team 2177) and Team 1094
(13th seed) as their third partner for the Elimination Tournament. Their
alliance made it as far as the semifinals before being eliminated. (Cool!)
Huron will be at Great Lakes in Ypsi this week. Since they're
"all tuned up" now, I expect they'll do well.
Chelsea HS (Team 1502)
My current team had a totally Defensive Bot. It had a VERY strong
drivetrain, plus a teeter-totter ramp capable of lifting two robots
over 12" at the end, for 60 points. No ring handler at all.
In the qualifiers we were able to lift two bots once, and single
bots several times. The double lift took a lot of teams by
surprise, for it LOOKED like a single ramp robot. From then on,
we were hounded at the end of every round by opponents, which
limited the number of bots we could lift. (We still lifted single bots
repeately. :-)
In the end, we came in FIFTH place out of 45 teams. (Yea!) We ended
up as the 5th Alliance captain for the Elimination Tournament.
We chose Team 931 (8th seed) and team 1182 (22nd seed) as partners.
Both were low and mid level ring handler machines. Though we were
eliminated, we were still very happy to get that far, the first
time out of the box. (We also learned some good tricks for later
regionals. :-)
Chelsea will be competing again NEXT week at the Detroit Regional,
(held at Wayne State University), and at the Championships in Atlanta
next month.
BTW: If any YAAARC members wish to visit the pits at either Great
Lakes or Detroit, bring safety goggles, closed toe shoes, and your camera.
Page me at the Pit announcer's station. If I'm available I'll be happy
to give you a tour of the pit area, introduce you to some teams, and
help enable you to get some close-up pics of their robots.
