for Defense Robotics has just awarded this year's "Federally-Funded Robotics 
Technology Development Projects" totaling $4.3 Million for Fiscal Year 2006
(NCDR doubled number of and tripled value of projects it funded in FY 2005):

There are some pretty cool, cutting edge projects described there.
It gives a decent view of the hottest trends in robotics today.
